What is the one skill/ technology that you want to learn as an Online Teacher?

Let us come up with a laundry list and maybe we can then get someone who is an expert from among us to schedule a training/ demo for all of us?

Joydip,

You have brought up a very interesting and potentially a vast topic. So I have created a separate discussion at http://e-teaching.wiziq.com/topic/91-using-the-web-to-build-your-e-teaching-business
I am sure we will be able to generate a lot of ideas here!

Hello All

I have been teaching online since 2005 for students of various countries like US, UK, Canada, Singapore, UAE, Kuwait etc.,
Good thing about online teaching is, its a challenge to teach a student when you are not seeing him (most of the cases, webcam is not allowed for the class). As we follow, the facial expression and body language of the student in the class room, here we need to follow the sound language of the student. With the help of his voice and way of answering, we need to assess and understand the student. One more important thing is, the handwriting and using the tools in effective way.

I keep on posting something in this. You can also send the queries regarding the etiquette of online teaching class.

Shabbar has made a very important observation that I think is the key to online instruction. Shabbar noticed that students come, stay for a short while and leave. The question he posed: How do you get serious students?
I think it's the classroom facilitator, moderator, or presenter who needs to consider changing tactics not the student. Teachers feel a sense of success succeed when students stay and provide positive feedback. Listen to your students and engage them in the process of learning. I suggest you find an alternative to merely adding content. Even if you are an excellent speaker, participants will get bored at some point unless you engage them and empower them to learn rather than "teach" them.

Dear Minothi:

Sure, do you have a webcam/ headset [headphones]? If yes, then please check if you have at least 512 kbps of internet speed and latest flash player from Adobe.com. If all is there and good, let us know a convenient time to schedule a demo for you. We will walk you through how WiZiQ works. It will take about 30 minutes.

Look forward to hear from you.

Thanks

It seems like we have finalized these topics:

1. How to build your teaching business/ market yourself?
2. How to attract quality students and interested students?
3. How to overcome not seeing your students?

Dear Mitra:
Regarding your online reading needs www.wiziq.com provides teachers and students with an online teaching and learning environment. Here teachers and students can meet online through a virtual classroom and conduct live classes on any topic. These classes can be private (confined to one or a group of students) and public (for anyone and everyone who is interested in that specific topic). Apart from this the content sharing option helps students to search for content relevant to their needs which is posted as public content by teachers or members.

Dear Shabbar:
I agree with Nellie but apart from that you can look out for learning requests on WiZiQ. These are specific learning needs from students who are interested in learning a particular topic, subject or course. For more information, please view the following link: http://www.wiziq.com/learning-requests/

1. I wanted to learn about how web2.0 could be used in promoting my teaching programs . Though I am doing a lot of web2.0 promotion ,still I would like to learn it in more detail , as I think , I am driven by trial and error method not by solid and subtle understanding of the tools.

2. I also need to learn how to create successful online event to attract more student for my classes.

3.I need to know ,how do I monetize my e-teaching efforts .

Dear Jinky Suzarah B. Manugas:

You can start with updating your profile on WiZiQ first it would be good if you add a profile picture and complete the profile to say at least 80%. Then to get students you can start with delivering some public classes on WiZiQ on regular basis say one class a week on a topic of your choice. Public class are free classes which are listed on WiZiQ and are accessible to all members. These classes give visibility and help you create a brand for your self as an online teacher.

Daniela,
i think your difficulty about not having students in front of you is very common but it is overcome with practice. As you take more and more classes I am sure you will enjoy as much as in a regular classroom.

Hello Vidyasagar. I completely agree with you about teaching without actually facing the students. I would like to know what subject you teach and how you onnected with the students

I am not sure what I need to learn to become a better teacher.I have found very interesting to watch my own recordings and to take another person´s perspective. It was very useful to me.
Maybe, to generate rapport quickly with students that you meet for the first time is a skill that I found very useful, and when it happens, students immediately are involved in the process.

I absolutely agree with Nellie, engaging students in the lesson is a key point in a class! Plus, giving them immediate feedback on their performance.

How do you get serious students, rather than just walk-in who see you class, attend for a few mins and go..
by Daniela A posted on 03 September, 2009
Hello,

I have not much experience with WizIQ, but I learned that first you must teach something that coul interest the students, second you must be there at least once every week. For me the most difficult is to teach without seeing my students; that makes me the impression that I can not manage enough my class. The site gives other instruments.....
by Daniela A posted on 10 September, 2009
You can get the feedback from the students by writing an exacly description of the classe or simply by asking at the beginning of the class(I made that). E.g.: if I schedule a class for beginners I must write this in the lesson description. But, in my few classes, I have got a good number of students all along my classe. Also another number that was living the class but not much. Maybe the name of the class was interesting....I can not tell now.
My attention was focused on "activate" every student....and that is not easy.....
And I think that is one of difficulties of an on line classe.....

from my personal experience, the teacher must know the complete background of the student(s) i.e. the cultural background, since different nationalities tend to have different way of pronunciations and if you cannot understand one another, there is then no communication..Language is the ability to express and communicate, right?

Showing your genuine concern with your student is also a plus factor. If they feel that someone care for their development then perhaps they would become interested in learning.
