Using OpenOffice

by Vijay Kumar
Posted on 04 May, 2010

If my PC or Note Book is 100% based on Open Source programs including Open Office slides - will it be possible to use WiZiQ just as I am using Windows now?

Grateful for an answer,

Warm Regards

How about save them as PDF. It is only a fraction of the size.

In the meantime, safe your PPT files in a different size. >>page set up >> change the dimensions to 200mm wide and 150 high >> safe file and print PDF. This will solve your problem for the time being,

Cheers Lori

I'm not sure if you can upload PDF for your virtual classroom. Maybe with the new version?

Yes, I also use open office to create my slides. You have to save them as PPT to be able to upload them to the virtual classroom. Make sure you re-open them in open office after you saved them as PPT, since some formatting seems to be changed (like colors on link text) when it's converted to PPT.

Yes, just use "save as.." and you can choose Microsoft Powerpoint ppt from the file types.

Thanks Marian!

Ah, but to convert the slides created by using Open Office as PPT assets, I will need Windows to be residing on my system?

Or, Open Office itself will allow me to save the slides as PPTs?

Evidently I am a klutz on technical aspects and I thank you for your patience,

Warm Regards

Thanks Lori!

Marian, yesterday I conducted a private class and before the class commenced I uploaded a PDF document and it appeared on the WiZiQ scree but I was not able to manipulate the document (like reduce its size to fit into a normal viewing pane)

I guess this will require work from WiZiQ, huh?

Pictures can be resized but not documents. It is my understanding that there are several enhancements coming after the new VC is launched. One will be a continuous document. This will allow scrolling through a doc vs the autmatic ppagination currently experienced. They also plan on developing a truly collaborative document interface which will be downloadable as a document when desired. They certainly are busy in the back rooms.

WiZiQ Virtual Classroom support PDF content and you can even upload it in your content library to avoid uploading the content again and again.

We will be adding zoom in and out feature in the new version of virtual classroom.

But what will the zoom do? How will it function? If the teacher zooms in or out, will the students see the same effect or will they have to zoom also? Will there be some way to turn "zoom" off so other people aren't negatively affected when one person decides to zoom? You can't base it on giving writing ability or not, because some students who can't write will want to zoom.
