GK and Current Events Modules for Competitive Examinations

I had a meeting today with Showick Thorpe . Perhaps he is one of the most sought after authors in India in competitive examination segment. Discussing the new feature of Courses as e.g. in WiZiQ.com, he was very impressed with what WiZiQ is offering to the learners. He further showed interest in the platform and wanted to know about if his company, or any of his publisher(s), offer access to various General Knowledge Courses modules developed for various competitions (like GRE, GMAT, SAT, UPSC, Banking, SSC etc.) to WiZiQ Learners, will our learners will be interested or not? I thought to put this topic straight to the most-happening discussion forum for opinion. Please post your comments on these:-
1. If Publishers are offering their services using WiZiQ.com, would that bring value for them?
2. As teacher would you be willing to license those contents in form of Test, e-books etc?

"The biggest tip I would give an institution is to allow the youngest and least experienced teachers to lead the way. And,equally important, allow them to experiment and make mistakes. It's a new world and battle we fight in. E-teachers like fighter pilots should be young and daring. Yes they need us old farts, but they need to be enabled to take the initiative and engage with their verve, naivete and daring-do. "
George If it was flying the plane which is carrying only me as young still gaining experience, I would have taken risk but when your plane has so many passengers whose career is as important as their life, i shall prefer an experienced person like you who knows through experience of teaching for many yearsto fly the plane,I if young shall prefer to be a passenger instead. Any competitive exam will require expertise in respective fields.
A teacher who has just started will be rather helped by going through matter of an experienced hands. Young teachers sorry I have no intension of hurting anyone, but myself I have gained through experience of my seniors.
Yes Mr Kalyan sure learners will be interested as such learnings are yet deficient on net and for sure going to help people. Go ahead with the idea. Do let me know If I can be any help. Good luck.

Kalyan Sir,
As teachers it is really lucrative to offer our students content in the form of e-books. If there is a known/famous publisher to add to the teacher's credibility, it's all the more encouraging.
The only point to be considered is that the publisher as well as the author of the content sold, gets their share of revenue in a transparent way.
For Publishing houses, teachers will come to you only if you offer some unique services, clientele and a wide reach.

Thorpe doesn't appear to offer my currently needed test preparation material. I am looking for IELTS or Cambridge exam prep materials. Particularly sample narratives for the listening portions. I deal almost entirely with students who are preparing and their biggest need is in the listening and speaking fields.

I would gladly pay for materials but I am afraid that the publisher would take issue when I am the only purchaser and I share freely with my students.

Yes, Ma'am.

I tend to overstate my cause sometimes. I also tend to be a romantic (or so I am told ;-). I think you make the better arguement, so how about a compromise? A young pilot and an old co-pilot? I still think that a company needs to find a new path in this digital world and the new teachers while standing on our shoulders can see further and new ways.

Hip-hip Hurrah!
Thanks Kalyn for sharing the WIZIQ portal. All for one and one for all!

I would offer that the biggest stumbling stone for moving traditional classes to online is in not rethinking the whole teacher/learner equation.

I see teachers who do the exact same thing online as they do off. Sorry, but these people are some of the most boring people one would ever want to meet. Sure, if a particular subject has one expert in the field and the students are well motivated to do anything to get his knowledge this would work. But, we are now in an open market and many students demand/need something different.

I also see teachers who use power point slides to try to hide the fact that they just like to give long lectures but with a minimal twist by adding some equally boring slides every 15 minutes or so and think "I am now multi media". But it is still missing the mark entirely.

Until we as teachers are willing to share the microphone and use the multi modal possibilities that online platforms like WIZIQ provides we are just continuing an anachronistic model this will surely die online as well as off. Some subjects require a lecture type presentation but who says that you must do it all the time, every time.

The biggest tip I would give an institution is to allow the youngest and least experienced teachers to lead the way. And,equally important, allow them to experiment and make mistakes. It's a new world and battle we fight in. E-teachers like fighter pilots should be young and daring. Yes they need us old farts, but they need to be enabled to take the initiative and engage with their verve, naivete and daring-do.
