How do we Earn on Wiziq?

by Englishteacher Namrata Arora
Posted on 02 February, 2010

Almost every teacher on wiziq puts this question; almost every discussion on this community has a post related to this question.
For those who want to teach for the sake of teaching and social welfare, please bear with us through this discussion.
I put forth a simple practice on this platform. I schedule a PAID Public class on "Prepositions", but there are 3 other classes on Prepositions by some other language teachers being held as FREE Public sessions, almost in the same week. The result is that the student prefers the FREE candy and refrains from spending on the Paid session. In most of these cases the student ignores the expertise of the faculty conducting the paid session.
For all the four teachers, there is no income.

Now, I as a fellow teacher, want to test market our Paid classes earning potential.
Is it possible to pick up a week, say just the last 7 days of this month and schedule only PAID classes? Which means none of us keeps a FREE class for those 7 days.
I have no authority to force it on any teacher, but I am extremely curious to know the results.
Waiting for your suggestions.

Thank you Austin for the direction. I am regularly promoting my classes on forums and websites, but the question relates to bringing attendees to the paid classes. That's what I am aiming at.
Kapil, I'll eagerly wait for the "silky way", till then we need to keep trying.

Hey Steve,
It's a pleasure to read your post here.
I fully agree with your stance. It's been quite some time since I have been conducting paid classes on wiziq. As you mentioned, the number of students in the free classes is almost twenty times that in the paid classes.
I again propose a dedicated week of PAID classes. What about the second week of November? Is it possible for a bunch of teachers (a big one) to conduct PAID classes (and no free classes) from November 8 to November 14, 2010? I am in, what about you?

Wow! Dr. Diana that's awesome...
I just went through your profile and found it really interesting. Your professional expertise would be beneficial for most of us.

Coming to paid classes, I am also going to schedule a bundle of paid classes. How do we motivate other teachers to do the same?

Dr. Diana, I fully agree with you. Valuing our own thing would in turn increase the perceived value our students hold.
Maree, who's saying you won't earn on wiziq? Look at the number of active teachers here, taking free as well as paid classes. I have been taking classes here since mid 2008. The key factor is to motivate students attending your free classes to join your paid Public or Private classes. As George mentions, wiziq will not reimburse you, you will showcase your talent to get more learners.
The good thing about an online platform is that students across the globe get to know about you and your services. Till date, more than 12600 learners have attended my classes, attempted my tests and checked out my tutorials on wiziq. Isn't this a promising number?

Interesting points Seansenglishlessons!
Wiziq is like a free economy system- when it comes to scheduling Paid or Free classes, the decision is purely ours. Why wait for wiziq to allow a fixed period for paid classes? Let's do it!
I have been conducting these paid I Speak You Speak English classes for over twelve months now. Believe me, I'll be the happiest teacher out here if my fellow teachers earn with me. Time to get going...

Hello Namrata!

That is an excellent question with a sometimes complicated answer. How we, as teachers, earn money online is we have to make classes. We make those classes at reasonable fees or you can make them at what you are actually worth. Then, you share your expertise to your potential students. (You must have a target audience in mind! Who do you want to reach?)

Then, you just market yourself both on forums and websites (without spamming! :P). Then, you just hope that you earn potential students and get your money.

This is how I do it. Anything I missed? :)

There are 27 postings describing the evolution of our ideas for a new earning/learning portal. A lot of hyperbole but if you can cut through the revolution rhetoric and unorganized presentation you might find an idea worth your consideration.

We meet on Sundays here at WizIQ, look for The Edupunk
by George Machlan posted on 29 October, 2010
As you know, I am totally a free enterprise lover. I particularly like WizIQ because they do not put any restriction on how much or how LITTLE we charge. I would ask you, politely but firmly, have you raised your objections to free schooling at your local school boards? And here is the bigger question that has been popping up among a lot of my friends lately... How can they ask us to pay real money for this platform and virtual classroom? These same teachers who wish to receive a "reasonable" income begrudge WizIQ from covering only a small part of their expenses. Sorry folks, I am in the same boat as you. But I value the ability to experiment and find a marketable manifestation of what we use to call teaching. This new world we are heading towards does not play by the old ones. And particularly expecting students or portals to provide us with an income. All of us must catch up to the realities of the free market and particularly the freedom of the internet to decide what behaviors and/or offerings it/they will pay for. I have not yet discovered a way but I promise to share all that I have learned thus far. We meet on Sundays on WizIQ.

Maree, there are quite a few discussions (older posts in this community) and class/discussions that are recorded here at WizIQ. Unfortunately there is no good way of searching either. The only thing I might offer is that you can go back through the earlier discussions page by page for some historical reference to this subject of earning on WizIQ.

However, that is old news. I and others are continuing to use WizIQ as a testbed, not only for their class ideas but also for viable economic models to find a better way to teach and learn for profit. I am getting things together for a pre-beta release of the thing we are calling The Edupunk on Wiziq (or it might be called St. George's Academy of Dragon Slaying and Spoken English... we shall see). No one, not even his royal highness Harmon (CEO and founder of WizIQ) have the answers. All of us are looking for the answers you pose.

yes Namrata - I've had feedback from some students who would like small groups at very reasonable costs to themselves, but giving the teacher an income for their time and expertise. I think this would help everybody, but as you say, this is difficult when many classes are free. Perhaps we ALL need to be a bit braver & work together to keep offering low cost classes? (Please don't think I'm just an ol' money grabber - I love teaching, but I also like to earn some money!!) and yes, I know not everyone is in agreement.

Hi Namrata-

The ring side view says it will not work until we dig out the rite way that makes such an idea become prime time.

As teachers our primary job is to bake newness into the system. I also realize our ratio of paid classes to free needs to prep itself up but there could be some different yet silky way to do it.

Take care
:-)

Would students be willing to pay a nominal fee for their classes
(after all even teachers have to pay rent and eat)? I'm not sure, having witnessed that many students sign up for free classes yet very few sign up once a fee is applicable.

As i'm sure you are aware WIZIQ are about to raise their prices. I happen to believe that teachers should be reimbursed for their classes, however I'm not sure of the best way to achieve this, but I think there is a good argument for teachers working together in groups or forming partnerships. I for one could not afford to disregard my paid work commitments to offer classes online for free, I would at the very least need to charge a nominal fee which would allow me to put in the work and effort I believe is necessary to be able to offer students an enriching learning environment. Seems to me that free learning has become the buzzword of late. I don't believe free learning is sustainable. I also see everyone else is making money from teaching except teachers.

Namrata,

Thank you, I believe that these other teachers must see the value in their courses. Understanding that it is okay to have a passion for what you do but you value what you teach then the students will do the same.

Hi Steve,

I also agree with you on the post. & Namrata I believe that is what I am going to do all of November I will have all paid classes.
by Dr. Diana Darnley-Gibson posted on 31 October, 2010
Namrata, I have been on wiziq for a short while and already I have potential learners. Whether you have free or paid basically it is the same. Only difference you can tell then who really is serious and work with that learner. Keep in touch with them etc..... I was told keep the classes going. Is that true? Are you generating income? But for one I love what I do and I have paid and free.

First of all, thanks Namrata for raising this question.
I joined WIZIQ to sell my experience as a teacher. Based on the lessons I have observed so far, it seems that learners use WIZIQ as a platform for free learning. This is not reasonable.
I think Anne is correct to say that we should be working together otherwise it's just not going to work. Something like a teacher's association or agreement (or whatever we wish to call it).
A minimum fee for lessons should be agreed. A $5 minimum fee, for example, would still be a very good deal for a student and it means teacher can earn as well - a win-win situation.
This won't work unless WIZIQ agree to dedicate a certain period of time for paid classes only. I also think one week is not enough because students would just ignore this week and continue taking the free lessons provided during the remaining 3 months.
It would be like running a school where teachers have to pay to give lessons and earn nothing. It's simply not sustainable.

By the way, I believe in demand and supply too George but if the price is zero it doesn't make sense for the supply side to exist.

This is an interesting discussion and I thank those experienced WiZiQ teachers who have shared their experience with me, a newcomer.

George - I'm unable to attend your live edupunk sessions as we live in different time zones; so am unable to ask you for clarification in a live setting. However, I am a little confused by your reply (above)and haven't quite made sense of it...it seems to require some background knowledge of your beliefs and maybe even, your culture. Maybe things are different in the US, but in NZ, education is paid for by revenue acquired through the taxation system. Children get free education but the teachers are still paid...by the government...as indeed, I am. I teach at a local high school and am paid by the Ministry of Education. Are you saying that teachers at your local schools don't get paid? And as to WiZiQ, I don't begrudge paying them...they provide a great platform for teaching and I'm happy to pay for it.

Namrata - this brings me to your reply, I didn't suggest WiZiQ should reimburse teachers so I'm not sure how that misunderstanding came about. I simply wondered if WiZiQ could help us solve this dilemma; after all, they promote the idea that teachers can make money on this site. Namrata, I also want to thank you for your re-assurance that it is possible to earn money teaching on this site. It makes be feel better about the investment of time and money that I've put into joining. I am a little confused though...you ask, "who's saying you won't earn on WiZiQ?" but I thought you were the one that began this discussion...and I thought your original post asked for solutions to the problem of earning when so many free classes were available to students. My apologies if I've misunderstood.

Can't wait to start classes and test the teaching/learning environment for myself.
by Maree Lovegrove posted on 29 October, 2010
Hi Everyone, thank you for raising this question, I have been wondering the same thing. I joined WiZiQ to increase my earning ability...as you say, teachers still need an income...I need to pay my rent, eat, etc. I have experience and training and don't think it's unreasonable to expect compensation for the time I put into my lessons. I've yet to hold a class on here; I'm still learning about the site. But I'm really disappointed to discover that I may not be able to earn money on this site due to the amount of free classes offered. After all, I have paid to be a member of this site and as Steve said, WiZiQ are increasing the membership fee. This makes me wonder if WiZiQ shouldn't also be protecting our earning ability, especially considering they also retain a percentage of our fee. This could be an issue to take up with WiZiQ. What do you all think?

Hello everyone.

I'm rather  new here on Wiziq. I am a Tutor, and make my living as a Tutor.  So I don't agree with the "apologetic" tone many teachers have on getting paid.  I'm not getting into "Deep Philosophical Consederations". I'm practical. If a student wants to take a class with me, they pay me first. If they didnt like the session, they dont come back. If they do like it, they return.  Its as simple as that.
