Conquering Your Fear of Public Speaking

by Austin B.
Posted on 22 November, 2009

Hello! It has been a while since I have taught here on WiZiQ, but I would really like to start up again with a favorite!

Public speaking is a common source of stress for everyone. Many of us would like to avoid this problem entirely, but this is hard to do. Whether we work alone or with large numbers of people, eventually we will need to speak in public to get certain tasks accomplished. And if we want to be leaders or achieve anything meaningful in our lives, we will often need to speak to groups, large and small, to be successful.

The truth about public speaking, however, is IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STRESSFUL! If you correctly understand the hidden causes of public speaking stress, and if you keep just a few key principles in mind, speaking in public will soon become an invigorating and satisfying experience for you.

I have taught this class several times before and have always gotten magnificent results. I really hope that you can attend and thanks for making me feel so welcome here!

I am just so angry with myself right now. I was caught up on EduFire and talking with everyone that I completely forgot about this class. If you signed up for this class and waited, let me just DEEPLY apologize right now. If you still would care to come to this session, it will be live tomorrow. Here is the link:

Please know that I am very sorry and that I take teaching at the utmost importance. Thank you very much and I hope to see you there!

Public speaking it's a pleasure for me. I like to communicate with large audience. I had up to ~ one thousand participant, was really fun.

Austin, if you talk about the bogey man, nobody will like you! It does sound like you know whereof you speak, sir. I would advise you to reword your class description slightly for the ESL student and resubmit this thread in the English learning community.

Hands down, speaking publicly for the ESL student is beyond the bogey man. It is a waking nightmare. I am renaming my fanciful English academy to "St George's Academy of Dragon Slaying" & (small print) spoken English. The fear of spoken English is, in my opinion the greatest obstacle my students face.

God's speed to you Sir!

Know ye that my sword is ready to be raised in your support!

I feel for you Austin. That is my biggest fears with WIZIQ especially as I seem to forget things more often as I get older.

I think WIZIQ will be releasing an assistant moderator function so if you have a regular student who attends your classes he will be able to open the class and provide some content in the teachers absence.

This is also to cover the contingency of technical glitches which look the same as teacher sleeping in.

We actually covered a work-around for this situation in one of our earlier "Me ESL Friends" meetings at WIZIQ. Here is a link to the blog: http://myeslfriends.blogspot.com/2009/11/notes-on-mef-104.html

or here is the class where we created a skit of just your situation
