Which LMS do you prefer? Canvas or moodle?

I'm experimenting with both of these systems at the moment.

I'd like to know from student user end which seems to engage more asynchronous activity.

Sylvia,
I personally like Canvas because it's a solidly integrated system with a variety of useful features that include everything from fast and innovative grading to video chat to support teaching and learning; and elegant user interface.

Sylvia,

You need a WizIQ account and a Canvas instance, either the open source community edition or the Instructure-hosted software. Open source users can configure the plug in once they start their 30-day free trial of WizIQ.

If you are a freelance teacher like you mentioned, you probably do not have a server, so the best solution for you is the Instructure-hosted software. You just need a secret key and access key to integrate WizIQ, which you can get by sending an email to sales@wiziq.com.

Let me know if you need any help.

Regards,
Richa

This article gives a good description about Instructure Canvas.

@Richa - I appreciate the information - thank you:))

I'll let you know how I get on.

In the end I installed moodle because you need a software developer to install the canvas API.

I have a question for moodle experts - when wiziq is integrated, how do students get notifications? I have enrolled users and given them passwords but they are not getting notifications and I have looked everywhere to see if I have to configure anything else?

 Thanks for the feedback richa

I was looking for the WiZiQ plugin for Canvas but can only find the Moodle one. It's integrated, isn't it?
by Sylvia Guinan posted on 24 August, 2012
I was thinking that individual freelancers don't need to integrate anyway.

I bought the canvas API but my husband who is a computer programmer couldn't install it as it needed coding etc. in programmes he wasn't familiar with. So, I changed it to moodle, which is very easy to install for a non-techie person.

I opted for LMS because my students get confused with links, classes and the wiziq platform - and i can't round them up - the LMS will give me full control and make it easy to post assigments etc. without multiple emails.

moodle needs a server so I have a hosting company doing that for a small fee.

Canvas is 'on the cloud' - no need for a server. I don't know if canvas would charge you for 60 students but freelance teachers are free on canvas - it was the wiziq integration that made it complicated for me.

Some peole use google docs - maybe i should have tried that first - but it looks good to have an LMS if you want large numbers of students and moodle is built for that - you can integrate google docs onto moodle also and lots of other things.

@ Marcus - Thanks for trying out canvas:)

Well it's a learning management system for students you already have, not a platform to find more students.
Also, you add students to your courses and then whatever you add to the course in canvas should go to their emails.

It seems to me that most of the information is all on one page and that the announcements area when you log in is like a message board.

Erison, Nellie Deutcsh is teaching moodle on WiZiQ.

Assignments - There is a due date, but if you want a recurring assignment, then it should be referenced as in "1 week" or "1 day" after the assignment is assigned rather than a fixed due date.

Do students get an email with the assignments or do they have to visit the site?
Are you able to send assignment files to the students?
Is there a link area so students can visit for further assignments, extra credit, or resources?

Also, how do you get students to go there instead of here on Wiziq?  It seems like the same paradigm.  You need to know the students first.

I emailed their support after getting, "To log in to Canvas Support you need to first log in to Canvas.
We were unfortunately unable to automatically figure out the URL for your login page for you."

And "Oops, I couldn't log you in automatically."

After that, I replied for support, and it had, "Please see the information below for details. To add a comment simply reply to this email. Thank you!"

The only information was my post to them, and then every time I reply, I get the same message back.

Their support is run solely based on an automatic robot message.  I don't see any real human helping out there.

I have tried Moodle, looks outdated and too cumbersome to use.  Students won't join a class, how will they navigate the arachaic link layout on Moodle?  Unless you are a professor at a school and students have to go there for a grade, I am not convinced people will voluntarily enjoy that site.

Canvas?  What is that?  Do you have a link?  Can I try it out too?

Sylvia, do you mean that you need software developers to use this online or you are trying to use it on a private server without the need of the internet?  I am trying to make a decision to use Canvas or not to keep track of my students, but if moodle handles this better using the internet, then I might consider it.  I just have to do something in October.  I have about 60 seniors in college and I need something dependable to record their progress.  If I don't use the internet, a simple spreadsheet might do the trick.

Canvas is finally working after a day waiting to be fully registered.  It wouldn't let me sign in, and now the "Oops" error messages are gone.  I am not sure if they did something being the scenes or if it just takes that long to work things out after signing up.  It looks better, but still a lot of linking around.  It would be nice to see one central visiting spot on the site instead of looking like a personal home page.  Perhaps they could add a chat or message board on the front page so you get updates of your students' concerns.  Right now a lot of clicking just to get to one page of interest.

"Well it's a learning management system for students you already have, not a platform to find more students."

That's the Achillies' heel I am scratching my head at.  If I already have students, why do I need Canvas or Moodle?  It adds one more layer between me and my existing students.  If it helped me connect with new students, then I could see relevance.

I would rather meet them in a classroom like Wiziq.  I feel these groups are putting the cart before the horse.

After I give an assignment in Wiziq, then I would receive the assignments in Canvas.  The way it is now, I have to email the student, hope they will do the assignment, and then email it back?

If I had students coming to me instead of me emailing them then I could use Canvas to track their participation.

I am just not seeing the usefulness of this.  Why not use www.ning.com instead?

I have tried Moodle but it appears too cumbersome. I must admit that my competence in using the platform could have some limitations. Could someone lead to a site that can direct me on how to successfully navigate through moodle.

Use WordPress and stop wasting you time with Moodle. You can do almost anything with WordPress and it has an LMS variant available. Check it out: http://www.learndash.com/learndash-lms-features/. WordPress can even do SCORM and HD video. There are literally thousands of WordPress developers that can design and program you any type of site using WordPress that functions as an LMS. It can have integrated ecommerce and a theme developed so it looks any way you want. Basically, you can do anything. Honestly, Moodle is old technology.
