From Common Core to Global Standards, Is the USA lagging behind?

by Tracy Hanson
Posted on 09 May, 2012

2014 is the target date for implementing the Common Core standards, yet right on its heels are the global standards.  Many administrators and teachers are unaware of the progress being made globally to streamline curriculum beyond the common core.  Are we lagging behind once again?  Is there a way for the US to catch up?  Can we use online learning and open resources to create an interactive cache of materials to support global standards?

@Amin,
Welcome to WizIQ.  Things are a bit slow right now but there are free classes every week.  You can also check the recordings of classes, there are hundreds.  To learn how to find stuff here, check these short tutorials.

Online education is not a replacement for live interactive studying.  Think of the computer as a supplemental tool, like a phone call.  However, there are no peers to study with beyond the isolated room that each student would be connecting from.  The social development students miss out on cannot be replaced by simply signing on to Facebook and staying connected.  They need face to face interaction with their peers and mentors.

When it comes down to it, the rich will still have the advantage.  Places like Wiziq just make a better Britannica, reference tool.

K12 Next Generation has been gathering educators and organizations around the world to fulfill the mission to consolidate and Promote Open Educational Resources into a Global Curriculum Continuum which will address those standards common among us all, providing quality education for all children anytime, anywhere.

Technology in education, learning through gaming, and interactive curricula are changing the way students are learning. The growing wealth of Open Educational Resources and the movement away from text books make it possible to develop high quality learning modules that address individual learning styles at very little cost.

When K12 Next Generation decided to form a "virtual supervisory union", it was with the idea that "if we build it, they will come." We would create a global umbrella to unite many solutions and approaches. Together, we can create a stronger, more creative, diverse, far-reaching, curriculum continuum with multiple approaches to reach all learning styles. We would, in fact, form a global organization pooling their resources in order to design a meaningful curriculum for our global learners.

We are the 21st century, where there are far more similarities among all of us than there are differences. United, we can make a world of difference.

(This is part of a paper I wrote to address this issue.  We have representation from 5 countries to date and growing.  If you'd like more information I'd be happy to send it to you.
