Since the invention of the kiss there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. The End. (Peter Falk as The Grandfather)

I have been trying to get several international friends to watch the movie "The Princess Bride" for some time now. Yesterday one mother told me that she heard it was a story about incest. What a shame that the best family movie in decades has not reached a wider audience. I am still surprised that people also consider our favorite Karaoke ESL song, Puff The Magic Dragon (link HERE ) is still thought to be about using drugs.

In my part of the United States (midwest-heartland) we are rather conservative and have traditional values, particularly as it pertains to family. One of the first things I require of new residents is to view this movie. (also "Hoosiers") . It has created the perfect formula for the entire family. I will not try to convince you why. Like any masterpiece, any explanation will be woefully short of the experience. I also think that it is perfect for developing your English. It elicits strong passions and pulls at the heart-strings throughout. Here are a few memorable quotes from the movie:

  • The Grandson: A book?
  • Grandpa: That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I'm gonna read it to you.
  • The Grandson: Has it got any sports in it?
  • Grandpa: Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
  • The Grandson: Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try to stay awake.
  • Grandpa: Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.

  • Westley: Hear this now: I will always come for you.
  • Buttercup: But how can you be sure?
  • Westley: This is true love - you think this happens every day?

The entire movie script can be found HERE More quotes can be found HERE

The whimsical tale will excite your imagination and your English. Run, don't walk to your video rental store and get it. Get your family together. Go to the bathroom first, or you'll be sorry. And enjoy! PS This narrative also lends itself well to our intended playful writing for the Eseel Project. Currently here: http://myeslfriends.com/wordpress/eseel/ The Eseel thing will soon have its own blog here: www.EseelWorkshop.com Original post can be found here: http://myeslfriends.com/wordpress/2012/02/09/the-best-guy-friendly-family-video-ever/
